Oh, Tulum!
My love for Mexican food is very real.
If you combine that with exploring a rich culture and beautiful beaches, going to Mexico was bound to happen. I was beyond blessed to not only go to Mexico for my birthday but also right before Shelter in Place went into full swing, so I got to see more than my Netflix shows and my family's faces through Zoom this year #blessed.
Mexico is large but the decision was between Cabo or Tulum. Like I said, spending my time splashing in turquoise waters was a requirement. This was my birthday trip, after all, and the birthday girl, in my opinion, should always get all wishes fulfilled. Cabo was closer but Tulum has Mayan ruins. Enter my second requirement: exploring a rich culture. Tulum came out victorious.
Now, I must warn you. This is not an article focusing on the hip and happening spots in Tulum. I'm not an Instagram influencer looking for a bohemian trip filled with days of sunbathing and evenings filled with clubbing. No, I'm the pale nerd getting a horrible sunburn after 2 hours in the sun, while spending a solid amount of time staring at the ocean, taking in the breeze and enjoying the views. I'm the lobster-red girl scouring ruins in the jungle gawking at the historic landscape like it's a soap opera who then fills her evenings listening to live music while enjoying copious amounts of tacos and strawberry frozen margaritas. I'm that tourist. And that's what you'll get here: loads of history, funny anecdotes and good pictures. I want you to experience Tulum on your couch, or wherever you spend your days during the Q (the Q = quarantine).
After a long flight and an excruciating line at Immigration, naturally, I made a beeline for the nearest local restaurant. Nachos were calling me and I had just endured a 7-hour flight to oblige.
I was avid on my mission to find the best margarita and burrito in Tulum and naturally, my quest was left unsatisfied until almost the last night and at an Italian restaurant of all places. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the journey of munching and sipping my way to success.
Next up we'll dive into Tulum. You'll get a better understanding why you can't judge this town on the pictures you see online alone. I'll also explain what a Temazcal is. Hint: it's the most transcendent experience I've ever had. Am I getting your hopes up? Good, it's worth it.
